Help: network parameters 17.03.93
Net-Control can ≤supervise 22 different network parameters≥:
(The default values for the alarm limits are shown in brackets)
- ⌠Netload⌡. (Minimum: 0.1, maximum: 50)
- Transmitted ⌠Kbyte per second⌡. (Minimum: 1.25, maximum: 675)
(1% network load corresponds to 12.5 transmitted kb per second)
- Amount of ⌠collisions per second⌡. (Minimum: 0, maximum: 5)
The received shortframes are counted in this parameter too.

- Amount of ⌠transitions per second⌡.
Transitions are measured before the Ethernet controller chip.
One transition is counted if and only if the carrier sense signal
goes from low to high.
Generally the amount of the transitions is equal to the number of
received packets. In dependence of the used transceiver or fanout
(particularly the Dec-Delni) an additional transition (Heart-Beat)
can occur at the end of each transmission. which is counted then also.
The amount of the blocks on the network is then amount of the
transitions divided by two.
Furthermore there can be spikes on the network. That are unintentional
very short frames, which are counted too as transitions. If the number
of the transitions is very high compared to the number of the received
packets, so exists presumably a hardware fault at the network, if
simultaneously the network load shows small values.

CRC- and alingment-errors and too long packets.

The calculation depands on the counted transitions and the measured
netload. It does not matter, whether correct or faulty packets
(collisions) cover the network.

- ⌠Percentage of block lengths over 1023 bytes⌡.
(Minimum: 0%, maximum: 90%)
- ⌠Averages packet length⌡ in bytes.
In contrast to the hardwaremeasurement of the packet length only
correct packets are counted here.

- Amount of ⌠active stations⌡ per interval.
This is the number of stations, which have sent at least one packet
in the interval.
(Minimum: 10, maximum: 300)
- Amount of ⌠two-sided connections⌡ per interval.
Herewith the number of the connections between two Ethernet hardware
addresses is meant with packets exchanged in both directions. This
parameter describes the communicationsactivity more exactly than the
simple to measure parameter of the amount of active stations.
(Minimum: 5, maximum: 300)
- Amount of ⌠one-sided connections⌡ in the interval.
This are the connections with no received answer packet in the
interval.
Broadcasts and multicasts are not counted here.
An example for a real one-sided connection are "keep alive packets"
of certain stations. This is however the exception. If the amount
of the one-sided connections is high in relation to the amount of
the stations, you should try to answer the question, why the
connections are one-sided.

- Amount of ⌠broadcast connections⌡ in the interval.
This is equal to the number of stations, which have sent at least
one broadcast packet in that interval.
(Minimum: 5, maximum: 300)
- Amount of ⌠multicast connections⌡ in the interval.
(Minimum: 10, maximum: 300)
- ⌠percentage of broadcastsenders⌡ at all stations.
This value indicates, how many of the active stations in the
interval have sent at least one broadcast packet.
(Minimum: 1%, maximum: 40%)
- ⌠Relation: Stations to two-sided connections⌡.
The relationship of the active stations to the amount of the
two-sided connections appears to be a parameter which is nearly a
net typical constant (depending of the use of the network). This
makes the supervision of this parameter meaningful.

If Net-Control is connected ≤only to the Ethernet box I≥, the parameters
"transitions, "error packets" and "packet length - hardware measurement"
are replaced by:
- Amount of the received packets per second.
(Minimum: 2, maximum: 1000)
- amount of broadcastpackets per second.
(Minimum: 0, maximum: 50)
- amount of multicastpacets per second.
(Minimum: 0, maximum: 50)
